It's all very slow-paced without the startling, existential scenes of the original YouTube series and the Wakey Wakey pilot. At least from this first episode, there are no catchy songs like the original. This seems way more like Channel 4 had too much involvement in the creation of this new series (and making it too mainstream) compared to the US company that helped film the original pilot. So, after watching this first episode, I am not at all convinced this is true. Writing the new version during the pandemic, often over Zoom, may have helped recapture that oppressive vibe." Here's a quote from that interview regarding the change in tone & plot between the unaired Wakey Wakey pilot episode and the new series: "But the timelessness and claustrophobia of the originals was missing. I read a Guardian article which interviewed Becky Sloan prior to the show's release. And the artistic detail, camera quality, diversity in mediums of art, and editing still make these new episodes feel big budgeted. So far, I have no issue with them having it more densely packed in small areas than giant Clay Hill. This also means DHMIS can utilize this enclosure for more horror in the show, as everything feels near. In a lot of the Sesame Street puppet shows, they’re in enclosed environments. Wakey Wakey looks amazing, but it’s definitely very open. I see a lot of people comparing it to Wakey Wakey and suggesting it lost budget or focus or was studio interfered, but what they said in the interview about keeping the show claustrophobic-I agree with it. The humor really shines with the extended dialogue. Whereas in the web show, with only the 8 minutes, we were given a few lines to go off. The 20-30 min runtime gives more focus on each character, too. Having spurts of gore before the end makes more sense to keep people’s attention throughout, and we still get the horrific ending here regardless.
The original web series format, of gradually-turning horror, was definitely changed. I personally think this episode was totally awesome. Looking forward to binging the rest of the season. It kept me guessing like the original series but had even more to explore. I was laughing for half the episode at just how clever each scene was. It's a bit more blatant now while not taking away from the naturally deep nature of its subject matter. They've also added more to Red and Yellow's personality too, though it's likely due to the longer run time that allows them to fit more character development into it.Īlso really enjoy that they're leaning more into the humor of it as it was more subtle before. It also might foreshadow what is to come with the other eps, I'm sure. Also seeing the difference in the way he thinks as an individual compared to the others in more of an entrepreneurial way where he questions things rather than blindly accepting them like Yellow and Red does adds even more depth to his character. Though they did good acknowledging that impression fans have of him early on in the episode when he announced "I'm the best one!" since he's likely to have been the less fan favorite of the three. Namely being more "respect" oriented and serious, detached from his emotions, and yet hungry for power, rather than just boring. Really like how they've infused even more personality into Duck, so we get to see more sides of him.
